ON THIS DAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY...

In 1880...
The first night baseball game takes place in Nantasket Beach, Massachusetts. A year after Thomas Edison invented the lightbulb, the Northern Electric Light Company out of Boston wanted to display their own bulb's luminescence and thus organized a baseball game between two department stores, Jordan Marsh and R.H. White, in the backyard of Nantasket's Sea Foam House. The teams played to a 16-16 tie before the players and their 300 observers had to catch the evening's last scheduled ferry back to Boston.

In 1986...
Transcendent athlete Bo Jackson makes his MLB debut for Kansas City, singling off Steve Carlton in his first career at bat. In 1989, Jackson hit 32 homers, drove in 105 runs, rushed for 950 yards, scored 4 touchdowns, rescued 15 kittens from trees, volunteered as a crossing guard during the school year, presented Jodie Foster with the Academy Award for Best Actress, and took a few swings at the Berlin Wall as it crumbled.
