Cardinals' starting pitcher Curt Simmons throws a complete game in a 7-3 win over the Phillies and rips an RBI triple in the second inning. Simmons would then steal home on the next pitch, marking the last time that a pitcher has stolen home in a major league game.

Mickey Morandini makes his major league debut pinch hitting for Sil Campusano in the 7th inning. He'd then record his first career hit to lead off the bottom of the 10th, setting the table for John Kruk to bring him around to score four batters later with a two-out walk-off single.
