Phillies Phacks n Stats 9/4/24

ON THIS DAY IN PHILLIES HISTORY - September 4...

Happy Happy Birthday to...

Pat Neshek  born 1980     Phillies 2017, 2018-19
    93 appearances  2.40 ERA  69 strikeouts (nice)

Jason Donald  born 1984    Phillies 2006 3rd round pick
Traded in July 2009 with Carlos Carrasco, Lou Marson, and Jason Knapp for Cliff Lee
Responsible for breaking up Armando Galarraga's perfect game in 2010 on a controversial call at first base by umpire Jim Joyce

Michael Stutes  born 1986    Phillies 2011-13

79 appearances  4.01 ERA
Former Quarterback at Lake Oswego High School in Oregon

In 1984...
Milt Thompson makes his MLB debut for the Atlanta Braves a year before he'd be traded to Philadelphia with Steve Bedrosian in exchange for Ozzie Virgil and Pete Smith. Thompson played 5 seasons with the Fightin' Phils, racking up almost 500 hits and 100 steals (492 & 98). Since 1980, 63 major league outfielders have at least 1000 hits, 30 triples and 200 steals in their career and Thompson's 3,761 at bats are the fewest among those players.

A member of 1993's Macho Row and the hitting coach during 2008's World Series run, Thompson is one of three people in Phillies' franchise history to win a National League pennant as both a player and coach, joined by Larry Bowa and John Vukovich.

ON THIS DAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY...

In 1928...
The Boston Braves kick off their first of nine consecutive doubleheaders, an MLB record. The Braves played 18 games in 12 days from Sept. 4-15, 1928, going 4-14 on their way to a 50-103 record, the second worst in baseball that season (Phillies 43-109).

In 1993...
The Yankees' Jim Abbott throws a no-hitter against a Cleveland lineup that included Kenny Lofton, Albert Belle, Manny Ramirez, and Jim Thome, up there with Jaylen Brown's NBA Finals MVP as one of the greatest accomplishments ever by someone who could only use one hand.

Last Night's Game -  Blue Jays W 10-9

- Last night was the first time that the Phillies came back to win after allowing 6 or more runs in the first inning since June 17, 1994 when the Fightin's strung together a six-run inning of their own in the 8th to take down the Montreal Expos 10-8.

- Kyle Schwarber joins Barry Bonds (2001), Carlos Delgado (2001), and Lawrence Butler (2024) as the only four players with multiple 3-homer games on the road in the same season since 2000. Adding a single and double last night, Schwarber became the 3rd Phillies player since 1901 with at least 15 total bases in a game.

This year the Blue Jays have a .231/.307/.364 slash line against left-handed pitching, their second-worst batting average vs. LHP in franchise history (2010 - .215).

- Bowden Francis has thrown 7+ innings and allowed only 1 earned run or less in each of his last four starts. Since August 1, Francis leads all of baseball (min. 20 IP) with a 1.05 ERA and .041 WHIP across 34.1 innings.
